The Important of Coverage Rate for Accurate Project Costing

The Importance of Coverage Rate for Accurate Project Costing

When you’re considering a coating for a project, such as lead abatement or roof insulation and protection, you want to look beyond just the price per gallon. While some coatings may look cheaper at first glance, they can have a lower coverage rate, which means your overall cost is higher per square foot.

The cost per square foot (or square meter) is the most important number because that tells you exactly what you’ll be paying when applying the product to your surface at the recommended coverage.

We run across this educational opportunity often with our LeadX™ clear lead encapsulation coating and CrystalShield™ roof insulation and mold/UV resistant coating. Both coatings have excellent high coverage rates and provide multiple benefits.

However, sometimes a customer only looks at the price per gallon number without going further, not understanding that our products are not only a powerful, multi-purpose option for either thermal insulation or lead encapsulating, but also often have the most competitive installed price.

LeadX™ Cost per S.F. Example:

Syneffex™’s popular LeadX™ lead encapsulation coating is $94.95 per gallon. A competitor’s lead encapsulating paint is $61.24 per gallon.

At first glance, ours looks more expensive… but it’s not.

LeadX™ has a coverage rate of 225 S.F. per gallon at the recommended application coverage.

The competitor’s product has a coverage rate of 100-125 S.F. per gallon at the recommended application coverage.

So… a contractor buying LeadX™ for their project is paying $0.42 per S.F.
If they bought the competitor’s product, they’d be paying $0.61 per S.F.

That’s $0.19 more per S.F., for the competitor’s coating, which would be an extra $1900 for a 10,000 S.F. project. A big difference!

CrystalShield™ Cost per S.F. Example

Our CrystalShield™ clear insulating and protective roof coating is $117.00 per gallon. A competitor’s white roof coating is $55.99 per gallon.

Again, ours looks initially higher, but that’s before you look at coverage rates.

CrystalShield™ coverage rate at the recommended coverage: 225 S.F. per gallon
Competitor roof coating coverage rate at the recommended coverage: 70-100 S.F. per gallon

CrystalShield™ cost per S.F. = $0.52
Competitor cost per S.F. = $0.80

So, not only does CrystalShield™ provide a clear option and additional mold/mildew and UV protection, it’s $0.28 per S.F. less expensive than the competitor.

Be sure you’re checking coverage rates when doing a coating comparison, otherwise you might be paying more than you think!
